Country of Origin: The island of Gotland, Sweden Beautiful fleeces for felting & spinning, skins, ewes & lambs available to buy In their country of origin these are known as the Gotland Peltsheep. They are bright, active and friendly sheep that are full of curiosity. Arenig Ambrose and his twin sister Arenig Amber: Born 27th March 2010 to Eden Crystal 3 crops in 1 - The Gotland yields well flavoured, fine grained lean meat, furskins and long, soft lustrous fleece which has an even curled staple, that is prized for spinning and felting. Eden Crumpet: In lamb (lambed 30/03/10); showing off her luxuriant fleece: Both ewes and rams have naturally polled, black heads with white markings and have short hair tipped tails. The fleece is predominantly grey but occasionally may also be black, white and brown. They are find boned with slender legs and an upright, alert stance. Ewes weigh 55 to 70Kg and rams 75 to 85Kg or more! Eden Darcey: Shearling lamb (born April 2009) The Gotland is classed as a hardy breed and meets the requirements of the Hill Farm Allowance Scheme, but due to their need for good quality herbage they cannot be regarded as a true hill sheep. In Sweden they are winter housed and respond well to winter housing in this country, especially in the run up to lambing(This also gives the opportunity for a second shearing). I house my ewes at the end of January in readiness for end of March/April lambing. Eden Crystal with Arenig Ambrose and Amber, less than half an hour old. She started true labour at 6.30 pm and both lambs were born by 6.50 pm: As a mother, the Gotland is excellent with very easy lambing, prolific and milky. The lambs are born black with a good covering of curly fleece and are very quick to stand and suckle. Eden Darcey & Dawn (background): These truly are remarkable sheep that are full of character. Short hair tipped tail: Greendale Jack (affectionately called 'Bump'); Gotland ram |
